The Timbers – A Wheelchair Accessible Housing Community
COVID-19 Program Policy:
If local community transmission in Sedgwick County is low, then optional mask wearing for staff and clients will be offered at The Timbers during appointments and activities. If the local community transmission changes to medium or high, masks for staff and clients will be reinstated. The program director will check the Sedgwick County Health Department’s website to monitor daily community transmission level.
Amenities and Features
The Timbers is a 100-unit, wheelchair accessible housing apartment community in Wichita for people with physical disabilities, featuring one and two-bedroom units. Each unit features roll-in showers, roll-under sinks and counters, accessible switches, weather radios, storage space, and large pantries. We have an accessible outdoor swimming pool for residents, as well as a congregate area for group activities, potlucks, and parties. Our Exercise & Wellness Program is also conveniently located on campus for participating residents.
Other community features include:
- Large pond with a gazebo
- Accessible computer lab
- Clyde C. Berger Library
- Security staff (nights and weekends)
- Group activities such as Garden Club, Book Club, adult learning opportunities, private events, and more!
In addition, the Timbers has three Federal Emergency Management Agency tornado shelters strategically placed around the campus. A HUD Service Coordinator is also on staff to assist residents with annual forms, utility assistance enrollment, nutritional commodities distribution, and more.
A U.S. Housing and Urban Development-funded property built in 1979, the Timbers was the first wheelchair accessible housing community of its kind in the nation. The Timbers has received multiple HUD Property of the Year awards.
