The heart of the School of Adaptive Computer Training is located in the Daniel J. Taylor Administrative Building at CPRF in northeast Wichita.
- It is here that the SACT first launched its first, fully accessible 12-student, 1,200 sq. ft. classroom for people with disabilities and others affected by the employment barriers. Each student workstation contains a Dell Dimension Pentium 4 computer with fully ergonomic furniture custom manufactured by ErgoGenics Technology Systems. The ergonomic workstations permit both computer monitor and keyboard to be adjusted separately to accommodate a small, seated person or a tall, standing person. A common table joins two individual workstations. On this center table sit two monitors connected to the instructor’s computer. Students can see what the instructor is demonstrating without being forced to constantly look up from their monitor to a projected image on a classroom wall. This arrangement was suggested by one of the school’s staunchest supporters, Digital Consulting and Software Services, Houston, from years of experience as a Microsoft Certified Technical Education Center.
-
Today the Wichita SACT capabilities include a second classroom and an assistive device training center where students who require an adaptive device, such as a one-handed keyboard or voice recognition system, can train to proficiency prior to entering the classroom.
The school is located on the city’s public transportation route and near restaurants and shopping. In addition to the classrooms, the school also has a full kitchen breakroom.
