Cerebral Palsy Research Advisory Council
In early 1998, the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation engaged in a strategic planning process, resulting in a new mission statement: To provide individuals with disabilities customized services, supports and technologies to facilitate their chosen economic and personal independence, with emphasis on employment and training options.
Accompanying this new strategic mission was the creation of a Research Division. This unit supports the CPRF mission through Internet research for funding opportunities, proposal development and program development. In establishing the research directions for CPRF and disseminating the results of that research to the maximum benefit of individuals with disabilities, it is imperative that the Research Division establishes and sustains an active Research Advisory Council.
Purposes: The Research Advisory Council fulfills several purposes.
- To reflect the needs of individuals with disabilities in Kansas in the selection and dissemination of research projects at CPRF, and to ensure that participants' confidential information and personal dignity are respected in all research activities. To this end, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a component of the Research Advisory Council.
- To reflect the perspectives of employers, financial institutions, and economic development organizations as these may influence the employment and quality of life of individuals with disabilities;
- To insure that CPRF research projects and services direct their attention appropriately to the needs of individuals with disabilities among under-represented populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, and to provide mentoring for them;
- To collaborate with the efforts undertaken by public school systems (especially through special education) and post-secondary institutions to provide adequate education and training for individuals with disabilities;
- To reflect the planning and efforts made by federal, state, and local governments investing in workforce development for individuals with disabilities;
- Perhaps most importantly, to provide evaluative perspectives on all research activities undertaken at CPRF and its partners who collaborate on research projects.
Strategy: The CPRF Research Advisory Council will meet at least semi-annually as a body. Its agenda will serve to provide advisory counsel to the Research Division to fulfill the above purposes.
